CNC Machined Steel Bevel Pinion and Bevel Gear for the Gearbox Manufacturing Industry

Reliance Gear Corporation has become a trusted resource for high precision custom gearing. With this tradition in mind, we were contracted to manufacture a precision machined steel bevel pinion and gear for a well-known gearbox manufacturer. Using 17 CrNiMo6 steel forgings, we utilized our CNC Mazak Integrex 35Y for turning and milling. The pre-grind bevel teeth were cut using our Gleason #26 Bevel Gear Generator. After heat treating with a special carburizing and hardening technique, we removed any distortions by finishing each member to the required precision criteria using our Heald #273-A grinder. After EDM machining a 1.500" wide keyway, now each member is ready for the final tooth grinding operation using our Gleason #463 tooth grinder. After insuring the quality levels have been met by analytical inspecting on our Brown & Sharp CMM, we then inspect the integrity of the tooth surfaces insuring no burns using nital etch techniques and insuring the absence of cracks using magnetic particle inspection methods. Additional processes include an actual roll test or meshing of the two members simulating the conditions in which the set will run. The desired bearing pattern (contact area) is obtained by making slight adjustments in the mounting and this information is actually marked on the matched set. Once our customer was satisfied and approved the development of the set, it was selectively shot peened and delivered.

The dimensions of the finished products were impressive: The bevel pinion had an outside diameter of 19.740" and a length of 5.9", with 35 teeth, a D.P. of 1.854, a P.A. of 20°, and a spiral angle of 30° - LH. The bevel gear measured 27.861" in diameter, had a length of 4.395", 51 teeth, a P.A. of 20°, and a spiral angle of 30° -- RH. These gears met the high standards of AGMA Q11 and had tightest tolerances of 0.001" in bores.
